The ROC (Taiwan) Travel Authorization Certificate (TAC) is an entry permit for conditional visa-exempt travelers who want to visit the country for tourism or business.

Who it's for
Conditional visa-exempt travelers from a small group of countries who hold a qualifying visa or residence document from a specific list of other countries. Regular passports only, so temporary, emergency, official, diplomatic and informal documents cannot be used online.
Permitted activities
Short visits. The purpose list covers business, study, sightseeing, exhibitions, visiting relatives, medical care, conferences and religious travel. It cannot be used for migrant work, and former migrant workers in Taiwan are not eligible.
Delivery format
A printable approval certificate. You must print it and present it at the border together with the original qualifying document, or entry is refused. It is inspected on the way out as well as on the way in.
Qualifying document rules
The rules vary by nationality. Vietnamese travelers cannot qualify on a Japanese or Korean document, Indonesian travelers have an extra route through a Japan Visa Waiver Registration, and anyone qualifying through Japan or Korea must also show they actually entered that country. A visa marked void or cancelled does not qualify.
Good to know
It cannot be extended, there is a cap on how many you can hold in a calendar year, and a replacement can only be requested shortly before the current one expires. Every traveler files individually, including infants. The certificate and the arrival card are separate systems, so you need a TWAC for every entry, including your first.

Our visa experts are available 24/7 on chat, email, and WhatsApp.

Do I need a visa or a Travel Authorization Certificate for Taiwan?

It depends on your nationality and if you already hold a qualifying visa. Visa-free: Citizens of the US, UK, EU, and (until July 31, 2026) the Philippines, Thailand, and Brunei can enter visa-free for 14–90 days. TAC (conditional visa-free): Citizens of India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar can apply for this Travel Authorization Certificate if they hold a valid visa or resident card from a "qualifying" country (US, Canada, Schengen, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, or South Korea). eVisa/Visitor Visa: If you do not meet the criteria for either of the above, you must apply for a standard Visitor Visa or eVisa.

What is the Taiwan "Online Arrival Card" (AD card)?

Even with a Travel Authorization Certificate, foreign visitors must complete the Taiwan Online Arrival Card (TWAC) before passing through immigration — holders of a resident visa, an ARC or a diplomatic ID are the exceptions. Starting October 2025, this digital card has officially replaced paper arrival forms. You can fill it in from 7 days before your arrival. With iVisa, you can easily apply for both documents in one go.

Can I enter Taiwan multiple times with one TAC?

Yes. The Travel Authorization Certificate is a multiple-entry permit valid for 90 days. However, you can only stay for a maximum of 30 days per visit. Additionally, you are generally limited to entering Taiwan with a TAC a maximum of 6 times per calendar year.

How will I receive the Taiwan Travel Authorization?

The certificate is sent directly to your email as a PDF attachment. Unlike the Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC), which is digital and linked to your passport, the Travel Authorization Certificate (TAC) MUST be printed. You must also carry the physical qualifying document (e.g., your valid US visa or Japanese resident card) that you used for the application. If you show a digital version only or the certificate without the supporting visa, you will be denied entry.

What "qualifying visas" are accepted for the TAC?

You must hold a resident card or entry visa (including eVisas) issued by Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, any EU/Schengen country, the United Kingdom, or the United States. The document must be currently valid or have expired less than 10 years ago. It must not be a work permit or a "Void/Cancelled" visa. Note: Simple travel authorizations (like an Australian ETA or US ESTA) are typically not sufficient.

How long can I stay in Taiwan with a Travel Authorization?

The Travel Authorization allows for a maximum stay of 30 days per visit. The certificate itself remains valid for 90 days from the date of issue.

Can I extend my Taiwan Travel Authorization?

No. The 30-day stay granted by the Travel Authorization Certificate cannot be extended. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for a formal Visitor Visa at a Taiwan overseas mission before you travel.

How long does Taiwan Travel Authorization processing take?

The official government processing time is typically quick. With iVisa, you choose your processing speed at checkout, and the option you pick is shown with its delivery time before you pay.

Do children/minors need a Taiwan Travel Authorization?

Yes, every traveler, regardless of age, must have their own individual Travel Authorization. iVisa makes it easy to apply for the whole family in one go by using the "Add another person" feature during the application.

What happens if my Taiwan Travel Authorization application is denied?

If your TAC application is denied online, it is usually because the system cannot verify your qualifying visa or because of a typo. If you are ineligible for the TAC, you will need to apply for a standard Taiwan Visitor Visa or an eVisa. iVisa's expert review catches errors so that your information is correct the first time. We also offer optional denial protection.

iVisa vs. the official Taiwan process

Why travelers choose iVisa

On your own

  • Eligibility turns on which qualifying document you hold, how old it is, whether you actually entered the country that issued it, and nationality-specific exclusions that sit in separate notices.
  • The official form is a single legacy page with misspelled all-caps dropdowns, no tooltips, no address helper and no save-and-resume, plus workarounds for travelers with one name or a passport with no expiry date.
  • You are asked for both parents' names, addresses and phone numbers, a Taiwan contact or hotel, and full details of your qualifying document, with no warning beforehand.
  • The portal supports a short list of languages, and does not include Hindi despite India being a main market for this document.
  • There is a yearly cap on entries, a narrow window for requesting a replacement, a print requirement, and an inspection on departure as well as arrival.
  • We check your qualifying document against the current rules first, so you are not turned away at the boarding gate.
  • You fill in a clear form you can pause and return to, and we handle the official page's quirks.
  • We tell you what to gather before you start, so you are not stuck partway through.
  • We take your details in your own language.
  • We flag each of these while you apply, and explain when the arrival card is needed alongside it.
