How long can US nationals stay in Taiwan?
US citizens can stay in Taiwan for a maximum of 90 days per entry under the visa-exemption policy. This 90-day period begins the day after you arrive, and your US passport must remain valid for the entire duration of your stay in Taiwan.
Do US citizens need a visa when transiting through Taiwan?
No, US citizens do not need a visa to transit through Taiwan as long as they remain in the international transit area and have an onward ticket. If you intend to pass through immigration to enter the country, even for a few hours, you can do so visa-free for up to 90 days, provided you have submitted your Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC) online before clearing the border.
Can US nationals extend their stay in Taiwan?
Generally, the 90-day visa-free stay for US citizens is non-extendable and cannot be converted to a different visa status while in the country. You must depart Taiwan on or before the 90th day. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days for work, study, or residency, you must apply for the appropriate resident visa at a Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) in the US before your departure.
