Taiwanese visa policy for American citizens

US citizens are currently eligible for visa-exempt entry into Taiwan for stays of up to 90 days. This policy applies to travelers visiting for tourism, business, or to see family. As of October 1, 2025, Taiwan has replaced all paper-based arrival forms with a mandatory digital system called the Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC). This must be completed by all foreigners to Taiwan, including US citizens, before arriving in the country.

iVisa offers the following Taiwan entry document for US travelers:

Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC): This is a mandatory electronic document that all US citizens must complete online within 3 days of arrival. It replaces the traditional paper arrival card.

General Taiwan visa requirements for US travelers are:

US passport valid for at least 6 months after arrival date Proof of accommodation or a local contact address in Taiwan Confirmed return or onward flight ticket

FAQs

No, US citizens do not need a visa for short-term visits to Taiwan. Under the visa-exemption program, you can enter for tourism, business, or visiting family for up to 90 days. However, all US citizens must complete the mandatory Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC) online within three days prior to arrival.

Since US citizens are visa-exempt, there is no visa processing time. However, the Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC) is processed within 24 hours upon online submission. It is recommended to complete the TWAC at least 72 hours before your flight to ensure your digital record is available to immigration officers when your passport is scanned upon arrival.

US citizens can stay in Taiwan for a maximum of 90 days per entry under the visa-exemption policy. This 90-day period begins the day after you arrive. It is important to note that your US passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Taiwan.

No, US citizens do not need a visa to transit through Taiwan as long as they remain in the international transit area and have an onward ticket. If you intend to pass through immigration to enter the country—even for a few hours—you can do so visa-free for up to 90 days, provided you have submitted your Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC) online before clearing the border.

Generally, the 90-day visa-free stay for US citizens is non-extendable and cannot be converted to a different visa status while in the country. You must depart Taiwan on or before the 90th day. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days for work, study, or residency, you must apply for the appropriate resident visa at a Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) in the US before your departure.
