Taiwanese visa policy for Canadian citizens

Canadian citizens don’t currently need a visa to visit Taiwan for short stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business. They are eligible for a one-time 90-day extension of stay (for a total of 180 days) through the National Immigration Agency, provided they enter under the visa-exempt program.

Canadian travelers need one Taiwan entry document:

  • Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC): A mandatory digital entry declaration that must be completed within 72 hours before arrival. Since late 2025, paper-based arrival cards are no longer accepted; the TWAC generates a digital confirmation that's electronically linked to your passport for immigration clearance.

General Taiwan entry requirements for Canadian travelers are:

  • Canadian passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Evidence of sufficient financial funds for the duration of the stay
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or host address)
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation (e.g., business invitation letter)

Frequently asked questions about getting the Taiwan visa with a Canada passport

Canadians can extend their 90-day visa-free stay for another 90 days (180 total). You must apply at a National Immigration Agency (NIA) service center in Taiwan at least 30 days before your initial 90-day period expires. You’ll need your passport, a completed application form, and proof of your original entry. This extension is granted as a special reciprocal privilege for Canadian citizens.

Yes. Every foreign national entering Taiwan—whether visa-exempt or holding a visitor/resident visa—must complete the Taiwan Arrival Card (TWAC) online before arrival. It's a border security requirement, not a visa application.

While answering emails or taking occasional calls for your Canadian employer isn't usually scrutinized, you cannot legally work for a Taiwan-based company or provide services to local clients. If you intend to stay long-term specifically for remote work, you should consider the Taiwan Employment Gold Card, which acts as a work permit and resident visa.

Overstaying is a serious violation. Penalties include progressive fines starting at $10,000 TWD (approximately $425 CAD) and can reach $50,000 TWD. More importantly, overstaying will result in a multi-year ban from entering Taiwan and the immediate loss of your visa-exempt privileges, meaning you'd have to apply for a formal visa for all future visits.

No. Taiwan’s visa-exemption program only applies to holders of regular, official, or diplomatic Canadian passports. If you're traveling on a temporary or emergency passport, you are not eligible for visa-free entry and must apply for a formal visitor visa at a Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) before departure.
