Austria is a gorgeous landlocked country, where the mighty mountains of the eastern Alps slope down into the farmlands of Central Europe. This is a place full of forests, prairies, and, of course, snowy mountain landscapes. It also happens to be a country renowned for its excellent food and beer. But before you can sip on any Austrian suds, you must first ensure you have the right documents, such as the Schengen visa, or Austrian visa as some refer to it.

What to Know About the Austria or Schengen Visa

We primarily say Schengen visa and not Austrian visa because Austria formally entered the European Union and signed onto the Schengen Agreement in March 1995. This agreement, now collectively signed by 26 other countries throughout Europe, allows for citizens of all member countries to enjoy visa-free movement across borders.

This means that if you are a citizen of any Schengen country, you can go to any other Schengen country without a visa or any other type of travel document. It also means that any visitor to countries listed as signatories of the Schengen Agreement can enjoy unfettered border crossings to other Schengen countries without having to get a unique visa or go through borders and customs for each one. The only restriction is the Schengen 90/180 Rule. If you are looking to work or study in Austria, then you will have to apply for a different type of permit, which we will address further in this Learn More page.

FAQ: Which countries are Schengen countries?

Answer: The following 26 countries have signed this unique treaty: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal. Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.

What is the Schengen 90/180 Rule?

Being able to freely cross over the borders of these 26 countries is quite amazing! You can enjoy the wild forests of Austria on a Monday and the very next day find yourself strolling Geneva's gorgeous downtown streets without the need to show a passport or obtain another visa. So naturally, there has to be some restrictions and the most prominent one for all travelers to Austria and other Schengen countries to know is the 90/180 rule.

The 90/180 rule essentially states that ALL visitors to the Schengen area can only stay in the area for 90 days every 180 days. After a 90-day stay, that traveler must exit the area for a minimum of 90 days. So even if you only visit Austria and no other member country, after 90 days you will need to exit Austria and will not be allowed into any of the Schengen states for another 90 days.

Who Needs to Apply for the Austria Schengen Visa?

There are currently 104 countries listed as needing its citizens to apply for a Schengen visa before they visit Austria or another country within the Schengen area. Citizens from the following countries will need to apply for a Schengen Visa before booking a trip to Austria:

Afghanistan Algeria Angola Armenia Azerbaijan Bahrain Bangladesh Belarus
Belize Benin Bhutan Bolivia Botswana Burkina Faso Burma/Myanmar Burundi
Cambodia Cameroon Cape Verde Central African Republic Chad China Comoros Congo
Cote Di'Ivoire Cuba Democratic Republic of Congo Djibouti Dominican Republic Ecuador Egypt Equatorial Guinea
"Eritrea Ethiopia Fiji Gabon Gambia Ghana Guinea Guinea-Bissau
Guyana Haiti India Indonesia Iran Iraq Jamaica Jordan
Kazakhstan Kenya Kuwait Kyrgyzstan Laos Lebanon Lesotho Liberia
Libya Madagascar Malawi Maldives Mali Mauritania Mongolia Morocco
Mozambique Namibia Nauru Nepal Niger Nigeria North Korea Oman
Pakistan Papua New Guinea Philippines Qatar Russia Rwanda Sao Tome and Principe Saudi Arabia
Senegal Sierra Leone Somalia South Africa South Sudan Sri Lanka Sudan Suriname
Swaziland Syria Tajikistan Tanzania Thailand Togo Tunisia Turkey
Turkmenistan Uganda Ukraine Uzbekistan Vietnam Yemen Zambia Zimbabwe

It is important to note that even if you are not living or working within one of these countries, say you have a UK Temporary Residence Permit, you will still need to apply for the Schengen visa if your passport number shows citizenship in one of the above countries.

FAQ: Is Austria visa-free for Indians?

Answer: While there have been conversations about adding India citizens to the Schengen area visa-free list, that hasn't yet happened. All Indian citizens will need to complete the Schengen visa application.

Required Documents for the Schengen Visa Visiting Austria

The visa application process is long and so it is important to start early by gathering all the correct documents together as soon as you can. You will need the following:

  • A complete and signed visa application form -- you can find this on our website at iVisa.com

  • Two full-color passport photos -- another service offered at iVisa.com

  • Your valid passport from your home country (it must be less than 10 years old and must show passport validity for at least three months after your planned departure from Austria)

  • Proof of medical insurance that shows your insurer will provide medical treatment coverage at a value of 30,000 euros

  • Details about why you are requesting the visa and your desired activity during the intended stay -- for example, visiting a family member might be your main destination, but you also plan on touring the Austrian countryside

  • Additional information about your lodgings for the whole duration of your stay

  • Proof that you have the financial means to support yourself from the point of entry into Austria or any other member state to your exit from the zone.

My Country of Citizenship is Not Listed, Do I Need Anything to Enter Austria?

If you are traveling in 2022, the answer to that is no. Unless you have been previously denied entry by the Austrian consulate or similar authority, you do not need any type of visa to visit Austria so long as you are not on the above list of 104 countries.

However, that will change in 2023. Starting in May 2023, all visitors to any member state of the Schengen zone without visa free travel will need to obtain Schengen area or ETIAS approval.

ETIAS is an acronym for the European Travel Information and Authorization System, which is a system designed to offer better safety and security to European borders.

What are the Costs and Processing Times?

We do not know exactly how much the cost will be yet but iVisa.com will offer 3 processing options. Simply fill out the visa application form on iVisa.com and then choose your preferred payment option and processing time.

There are three processing times iVisa.com will have available:

  • Standard processing. This takes the longest time but is the best choice for the budget traveler who prepares early.

  • Rush processing. This option is a bit faster and a good choice for those who don't mind paying a bit extra in order to receive their visa quicker.

  • Super rush processing. If you forgot about needing a visa or are otherwise booking a last-minute trip to the EU, then this is the best choice for you. We will get you your visa as fast as possible.

Do I Need an Austria or Schengen Visa if I am Just Transiting Through Austria?

Yes, all foreign nationals will need a visa in transit.

If you are traveling by bus, train, or private vehicle, you will need to complete the Schengen visa process in its entirety. This is true even if you don't plan on exiting the vehicle or otherwise stay in Austria.

If you are traveling by plane and have a layover or flight change in Austria or another Schengen country, then you can apply for a simpler visa called the Schengen Transit Visa.

COVID-19 Restrictions for Austria

As of June 10, 2022, Austria has dropped all of its COVID-19 restrictions, with some exceptions in Vienna. Vaccination status, whether fully vaccinated or not, is not checked nor is there any testing required before entry. However, Vienna does require FF2 masks to be worn on public transit and for entry into any pharmacy. Underage children are exempt while young people aged 14 and older are not.

I'm Traveling With Minors, Do They Need an Austrian Visa?

Yes. Every minor that is traveling with or without a parent or authorized guardian will need to complete a Schengen visa application and have the requisite sticker on their passport.

Can I Obtain Austrian Citizenship With a Schengen Visa?

No. To become an Austrian citizen is a long process and one that requires a completely different type of visa and application process. There is also a strict list of requirements before you can even be considered. That list includes:

  • Gainful employment or proof of sufficient financial means to exceed all anticipated household expenses

  • Absolutely no criminal record -- Austria is especially sensitive about any records of physical assault, including sexual assault and domestic violence as well as situations like barroom brawls

  • Proof of high integration into Austrian life

  • Proficiency in the German language at a B1 or B2 level

  • Proof of full renunciation of any former citizenship

  • Valid residence permit (which requires its own list of prerequisites)
