Barbados ED Card

Purpose: The Barbados ED Card (Electronic Passenger Customs and Immigration Form) is a mandatory digital document for all travelers—including residents and visitors—to provide immigration and customs declarations before entering the country.

When to apply: It must be completed within 72 hours of arrival in Barbados. It’s strongly recommended to submit it at least 24 hours before departure.

Duration and extensions: This document is an entry requirement and doesn't dictate stay duration. Most visitors are granted a stay of up to 6 months upon arrival.

Entries: A new ED Card must be submitted for every entry into Barbados.

Ports of entry: Mandatory for travelers arriving at Grantley Adams International Airport (BGI) and the Bridgetown Port.

Delivery format: Upon submission, an email with a receipt and a QR code is sent to the traveler. This receipt must be saved to a mobile device or printed to be presented to immigration and customs officials at the border.

Entry Visa (Tourist and Business)*

This is for travelers from visa-required countries visiting for tourism, holidays, or business meetings. A single-entry visa is valid for 3 months, while a multiple-entry visa is valid for 6 months. You must obtain this before travel; it's issued as a letter to be presented at the border for a passport endorsement.

*We currently don’t offer this visa.

Welcome Stamp (Digital Nomad Visa)*

This visa is for remote workers, freelancers, and entrepreneurs employed by entities outside Barbados. To qualify, you must earn a specified amount. It's valid for 12 months, allows for multiple entries, and is renewable. Holders are exempt from local income tax on their foreign-sourced earnings.

Student Visa*

This permit is for non-nationals enrolled in a primary, secondary, or tertiary educational institution in Barbados. It requires an acceptance letter from a school registered with the Ministry of Education and proof of financial support. It's typically valid for one to three years (renewable) or for the duration of the course.

*We currently don’t offer this visa.

Short-Term Work Permit*

This is for individuals coming to Barbados for specific temporary work assignments or training. It's employer-sponsored and can't be obtained by the individual alone. It's valid for a period of up to 11 months and isn't usually renewable.

*We currently don’t offer this permit.

Long-Term Work Permit*

This permit is for foreign professionals filling a role that couldn't be satisfied by a local Barbadian or CARICOM national. The employer must provide evidence of local recruitment efforts. It's generally valid for up to 3 years and can be extended.

*We currently don’t offer this permit.

Special Entry and Reside Permit (SERP)*

This is for high-net-worth individuals, retirees, or investors who want to live in Barbados without working locally. It's ideal for those purchasing property or making significant investments on the island. Depending on the category and the applicant's age, it can be valid for 5 years or for a lifetime.

*We currently don’t offer this permit.

Most foreign nationals, including US, UK, and Canadian citizens, don't require a visa before traveling to Barbados for tourism for stays up to six months. Barbados doesn't offer a specific Visa on Arrival (VoA) service; travelers from visa-required countries must obtain an Entry Visa before arrival. Citizens of CARICOM nations enjoy freedom of movement and aren't subject to standard visitor time limits.

General Barbados visa requirements are:

  • Passport valid for the entire duration of stay and at least one blank page

  • Recent passport photo

  • Travel details (such as a return or onward ticket and intended address in Barbados)

  • Proof of sufficient financial means for the duration of stay

  • Additional supporting documents depending on visa type (e.g., school acceptance letter for Student Visas or a job offer for work permits)

Barbados does not issue visas on arrival. You must either be visa-exempted or apply for the correct visa in advance. Attempting to board a flight without the right documentation could result in denied entry.

Most travelers from countries like the US, UK, EU, and Canada don’t need a visa and can stay up to 90 or 180 days, depending on nationality.

If you're from a visa-required country (such as Haiti or the Dominican Republic), you must apply in advance through a Barbadian embassy. You'll need a valid passport, proof of accommodation, return ticket, and funds to support your stay. Processing takes 2–4 weeks.

Every traveler must also fill out the ED Card, even if you don’t need a visa.

Yes. Every traveler, including infants and children, must have their own completed Barbados ED Card. Parents or guardians can complete it on their behalf.

No, the ED Card is not a visa. It's a mandatory digital travel form that all travelers arriving by air must complete before entry. Even if you're visa-exempt, you still need to submit an ED Card.

No, you cannot work in Barbados on a Tourist eVisa. This visa is strictly for leisure travel or family visits, and any kind of paid employment or freelance activity is prohibited under this visa category. If you are caught working on a tourist visa, you risk fines, detention, or a ban from re-entering Barbados.

Overstaying without an approved extension may result in fines, detention, or future entry bans. You should always apply for an extension before your current permission expires through the Barbados Immigration Department.
