Kenya eTA

Purpose: The Kenya Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) allows travelers to enter Kenya for tourism, business visits, family visits, or short stays.

When to apply: The eTA must be obtained before travel. It’s recommended to apply at least a few days before departure.

Processing time: Most applications are processed within a few business days, though travelers should apply in advance in case additional review is required.

Duration and extensions: The eTA generally allows a stay of up to 90 days from the date of entry. Extensions may be requested through Kenyan immigration authorities before the permitted stay expires.

Entries: Typically issued for single entry.

Delivery format: This is a digital travel authorization sent by email and electronically linked to your passport. Travelers must present it before boarding and upon arrival.

Kenya East Africa Tourist Visa*

The Kenya East Africa Tourist Visa allows travel between Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda on a single visa for tourism purposes. It is valid for up to 90 days and permits multiple entries between the three participating countries, provided you remain within them. You must apply through the country you will enter first.

Kenya Transit Visa*

The Kenya Transit Visa is required for certain travelers who are passing through Kenya on their way to another destination and plan to leave the airport during their layover. It is typically valid for a short stay only and must be obtained in advance if required based on nationality.

Kenya Business Visa*

The Kenya Business Visa is intended for travelers visiting Kenya for business-related activities such as meetings, conferences, or professional engagements beyond standard visitor permissions. It must be obtained in advance if required based on nationality and purpose of travel.

Kenya visa policy

Most travelers must obtain an approved Kenya eTA before traveling to Kenya for tourism, business, or short stays. The eTA is required prior to boarding and must be presented upon arrival. Travelers who previously qualified for visa-free entry are now generally required to obtain an eTA before departure.

Kenya also participates in the East Africa Tourist Visa program with Uganda and Rwanda. Travelers visiting multiple countries in the region may need to apply for that visa instead, depending on their itinerary and first point of entry.

General Kenya visa requirements are:

Proof of onward or return travel
Proof of accommodation in Kenya

What is the difference between the Kenya eTA and the East Africa Tourist Visa?

The Kenya eTA allows short stays in Kenya only. The East Africa Tourist Visa allows tourism travel between Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda on a single visa for up to 90 days. If you plan to visit more than one of these three countries on the same trip, the East Africa Tourist Visa may be more appropriate. You must apply through the country you enter first.

When do I need a Kenya Transit Visa instead of an eTA?

Most travelers now require an eTA before traveling to Kenya, even for short stays. A Transit Visa may apply in limited situations for travelers connecting onward to a third destination, particularly if leaving the airport during a layover. Your nationality and itinerary determine which authorization is required.

Can I conduct business activities in Kenya with an eTA?

Yes, limited business activities such as meetings, conferences, and short professional visits are generally permitted under the eTA. However, employment or paid work in Kenya requires the appropriate work permit or pass issued in advance.

Can I convert a Kenya eTA into a long-term visa or work permit after arrival?
