Learn more about Mauritius Tourism
When Mark Twain said ‘Mauritius was made first and then heaven, heaven being copied after Mauritius’, he didn’t lie. This place is a paradise full of powder-white sands with turquoise waters, as well as luxury resorts and lush areas. Mauritius has beaches and so much more as it also has a mountainous interior that makes it the perfect place for hiking. You can also get to know many colonial plantation houses and botanical gardens. In simpler words, Mauritius is indeed a heaven, which is why we’re ready to give you some ideas on the best things you can do there.
Before we explain the list of things we recommend, remember that Mauritius requires certain documentation to allow foreign entry. It is not complicated as most nationalities don’t require a paper visa, but a Mauritius Premium Visa. The Mauritius Premium Visa is a travel paper intended to encourage long-term travel to the country. This document was designed for tourists, professionals, or retired people who wish to stay and work remotely in a COVID-19 safe place. Besides, with this visa, you can also take your family there. As you can see, the Mauritius Premium Visa is very convenient and easy to get. You can find more information about this document at the end of this article.
The real Mauritius is away from the beach resorts, it is within its lush forests, quiet fishing villages, and kind citizens. On this small island, you have plenty of things to do.
Firstly, you must dive into the Mauritian wildlife to find incredible treasures, especially when we talk about fish species. Some of the Indian Ocean’s best dives are off the west coast of Mauritius. This western coast and hinterland is the nation's most diverse region, which is why you can easily find many underwater diving treasures. Here you can find the bustling tourist hub of Flic en Flac, and further south the sandy bays and mountainous backdrops of Black River (Rivière Noire) and Tamarin.
Le Morne Brabant is another spot you can find on the coastline's southern tip. Plus, not so far from this area, you can visit one of the country’s most underrated attractions: the Black River Gorges National Park, which is a vast expanse of rolling hills and thick forest covering roughly 2% of the island's surface.
600km northeast of the mainland, you can find Rodrigues Island, a small volcanic outcrop surrounded by a crystal-clear lagoon and a stunning mountainous area. This might be one of the most isolated places in the world, but it’s fascinating as well. It is often called ‘Mauritius of 25 years ago, but it’s actually a bit different from its neighboring brother. Beyond the beautiful scenery with white-sand beaches, this island’s population is mostly Creole and African, plus, you won’t find a stalk of sugar cane here (contrary to Mauritius mainland). With its hilly landscape and wonderful views, this island offers a peaceful lifestyle and an incredible time-warp vibe. Additionally to the peaceful environment, you can also taste delicious food and enjoy numerous local activities.
Mauritius also offers you an amazing experience if you visit Chamarel, a village located in Riviere Noire District. This place is famous for its wonderful mountain as well as its cool breezes and world-recognized rum. Chamarel is a town with a great culinary scene that's worth crossing the island for. Plus, it's home to the famous Terres de 7 Couleurs and Rhumerie de Chamarel. This place is not far away from the Black River Gorges National Park and the precipitous Chamarel Waterfall, as it works as a western gateway to these places.
Near Mauritius mainland, you can take a tour of Île aux Aigrettes. This ecotourism spot is a 26-hectare nature reserve on an island, and it’s only 800m off the coast. It is home to very rare remnants of the coastal forests of Mauritius and it offers a sanctuary for a range of endemic and endangered wildlife species. To visit this place, you must be part of a guided tour as you cannot visit it by yourself. However, it is not difficult to find one as they leave from Pointe Jérome, close to Le Preskîl. Some of the highlights are Aldabra giant tortoises, ebony trees, colorful flowers, and the endangered pink pigeon.
In Pamplemousses, you can take advantage of the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens, one of the world's best botanical gardens (only after London's Kew Gardens). This place is among the most popular tourist attractions in Mauritius and it is easily reached from almost anywhere on the island. You can hire one of the professional guides who wait just inside to enjoy the tour, or you can use the maps for a self-guided tour. Bear in mind that golf-buggy tours are available on request for those with limited mobility.
Mauritius is a wonderful place to relax at the beach, and in the easternmost area, you can find some of the most beautiful locations. This area is famous for the romantic sobriquet La Côte Sauvage (The Wild Coast), but it’s also home to great nightclubs and souvenir shacks. As for the beaches, we recommend you visit Palmar Public Beach, a small but perfectly formed place lapped by waters with a near-perfect shade of turquoise on a sunny day. This place is the best pick of the public beaches on Mauritius' east coast.
If you’re ready to visit this country, then you’re ready to prepare your luggage and check the travel documentation required. The great news about that is that you don’t need too many things to visit this nation, especially since they recently launched the Mauritius Premium Visa. Keep in mind that the Mauritius Premium Visa allows you to stay in the country for a certain period without having to worry about your legal status there. To qualify for the Mauritius Premium Visa, you must have valid proof of long-stay plans and sufficient travel and health insurance for the period of stay.
As you can guess, you should also have proof of funds (bank statement or bank attestation) to meet the cost of a stay in Mauritius. It should be a minimum of USD 1500/EUR 1300 as per the exchange rate applicable.
We can help you process the Mauritius Premium Visa within a few minutes, so we invite you to use our services to get this document in the easiest way possible!
