Do UK citizens need a visa for Ecuador?
No. British citizens do not need a visa to visit Ecuador for tourism and may stay up to 90 days in a 12-month period. The Customs Registration Form is not a visa — it is a customs declaration, and it applies only to travelers carrying declarable goods or currency.
Do I need the Customs Registration Form for my trip?
Only if you are bringing taxable goods above the personal-effects allowance, carrying cash, bearer negotiable instruments, precious metals or precious stones worth USD 10,000 or more, or registering currency on entry as a non-resident foreigner to claim the currency-exit tax exemption. SENAE's own wording is "sólo si" — only if. Ordinary luggage and ordinary amounts of money do not require it.
I read that every traveler to Ecuador has to file the Customs Registration Form. Is that right?
No. The requirement was announced in July 2025 in terms widely read as covering everyone, and SENAE publicly clarified on July 14, 2025 that the form is not universal: it applies to travelers who meet one of its triggers. Several law-firm and news alerts still carry the original reading and have not been corrected.
Does the Customs Registration Form apply when I leave Ecuador?
It can. The obligation is not universal: it follows the trigger. Cash, bearer negotiable instruments, precious metals and precious stones at or above USD 10,000 are declared in both directions, so a traveler still carrying that value on the way home files for that crossing too. Taxable goods trigger the form on entry only. A non-resident foreigner who registered currency on entry to claim the ISD exemption completes that registration on the way out. Nothing in the government process reminds you of it.
What counts towards the USD 10,000 threshold?
Cash, bearer negotiable instruments, precious metals and precious stones, added together — not banknotes alone. Amounts in other currencies count at their equivalent value, and mainland Ecuador uses the US dollar, so for dollar cash the figure is literal.
Do my children need their own declaration?
No. Minors are declared inside one parent's form — SENAE's family group is the children together with one parent or their legal guardian. When both parents travel, only one holds the family group and the other files as an individual. Adults traveling together each file their own.
What happens if I do not file when I should have?
A fine of 30% of the undeclared amount, rising to 50% for a repeat or a false declaration, plus possible retention of the goods and a money-laundering investigation. Travelers are not refused entry over it, and a paper form is accepted at the control point in exceptional cases.
