Uganda East Africa Visa requirements

The Uganda East Africa Tourist Visa (EATV) is a joint regional visa that allows travelers to visit the Republic of Uganda, the Republic of Rwanda, and the Republic of Kenya for tourism purposes. You must visit Uganda first with this visa.

This multi-entry visa is designed to promote regional travel and provides a seamless experience for tourists exploring East Africa.

This digital system streamlines the entry process, removing the need to visit multiple embassies or wait in long lines for separate visas upon arrival at each border.

Frequently asked questions about the Uganda East Africa Visa

As of 2026, Uganda requires an eVisa for citizens of most Western nations (including the US, UK, EU, Canada, and Australia), which must be obtained online before travel. However, nationals of 40 countries, such as those in the East African Community, can now enter visa-free for up to three months.

Regardless of your visa status, all travelers must present a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate and a passport with at least six months of validity upon arrival.

Yes. The most important rule for the East Africa Tourist Visa is missing from your text: You must apply through the country that is your first point of entry.

  • If you land at Entebbe (Uganda) first, you must apply for the Uganda East Africa Visa.

  • If you land in Nairobi (Kenya) first, you apply for the Kenya visa. Similar for Rwanda.

Using an East Africa Tourist Visa issued by Rwanda or Kenya to enter Uganda first can lead to entry denial.

No. While Tanzania and South Sudan are members of the East African Community, they are not currently part of the East Africa Tourist Visa scheme. You will need to apply for separate visas if you plan to visit those specific countries during your trip.

If you remain in the airport transit area at Entebbe International Airport and do not pass through immigration, you do not need a visa.

However, if you wish to leave the airport or if your transit involves a change of terminals that requires clearing immigration, you must obtain a transit visa or an eVisa.

Uganda has largely transitioned to an electronic application system. While some travelers may still attempt to get a visa on arrival, the Ugandan government strongly encourages all visitors to apply online via the eVisa portal before travel to avoid being denied boarding or facing significant delays at the border.

You will receive your approved visa as a PDF document via email. It will contain a barcode and your travel details. You must print a physical copy of this document to present to the immigration officer. The officer will also check your physical passport and your Yellow Fever vaccination certificate before stamping your entry.

If you applied through iVisa, you’ll also find a copy of your PDF in your dashboard.

The East Africa Tourist Visa is valid for up to 90 days from the date of issue. It is a multi-entry visa within the three participating countries (Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda). However, if you travel outside of these three countries, the visa becomes invalid for re-entry.

The East Africa Tourist Visa cannot be extended. If you wish to stay longer than 90 days, you must apply for a different class of visa or a residency permit through the Ugandan Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control.

Government processing usually takes between 3 to 6 business days.

By using iVisa’s services, you can choose Standard, Rush, or Super Rush processing to ensure your documents are perfectly prepared and submitted for the fastest possible turnaround, in as fast as 3 days.

Yes. Every traveler, regardless of age, must have their own approved visa. For minors, you may be required to provide a birth certificate and a letter of consent if they are traveling with only one parent or a legal guardian.

You can use iVisa’s "Add another person" feature to manage the entire family's applications in one go.

Common reasons for rejection include:

  • Failure to upload a valid Yellow Fever vaccination certificate

  • Passport validity of less than 6 months

  • Blurry or low-quality document scans

If it’s denied, we can help you reapply correctly. iVisa mitigates this risk by having experts review your application for clarity and compliance before it ever reaches the Ugandan government.
