Laos visa policy

Citizens of certain countries – including ASEAN member states and select bilateral partners – can enter Laos visa-free for up to 14 or 30 days, depending on the agreement. Many other nationalities are eligible to obtain a Visa on Arrival at international airports and border checkpoints, or they can apply online for an eVisa (Electronic Visa) before travel.

Nationals from countries not covered by visa exemptions or eVisa eligibility must apply for a visa in advance through a Laotian embassy or consulate. These non-immigrant visas include categories such as the Tourist Visa, Business Visa, Transit Visa, Student Visa, and Labor Visa. Each is tied to the applicant’s purpose of travel and may require supporting documentation such as invitation letters or sponsorship.

The Government of Laos also issues longer-term visas and residence permits for foreign investors, technical experts, and diplomatic staff. Some of these visa types require coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Immigration, and other agencies such as the Ministry of Planning and Investment or the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare.

In addition, travelers entering Laos must comply with standard entry requirements, including presenting a passport valid for at least 6 months and completing an immigration and customs declaration form on arrival. Visa extensions are possible for certain visa types through provincial immigration offices, while others require a formal renewal process or leave-and-reenter procedures.
