Canada Visitor Visa

Purpose: The Visitor Visa (Temporary Resident Visa) is for citizens of visa-required countries traveling for tourism, business, or visiting family.

When to apply: Apply at least two to three months in advance. Processing times vary significantly by country and seasonal demand.

Duration and extensions: It allows a stay of up to six months. Like the eTA, you can apply for an extension to stay longer as a visitor before your current status expires.

Entries: Most visitor visas are issued for multiple entries and are valid for up to 10 years or until the passport expires. Single-entry visas are occasionally issued for specific, one-time events.

Ports of entry: It's accepted at all ports of entry, including airports, land borders, and seaports.

Delivery format: The visa is a physical sticker (foil) affixed to a page in your passport. You must submit your passport to a Visa Application Center (VAC) once the application is approved.

Canada ETA

Purpose: The Canada Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is a mandatory entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling to or transiting through Canada by air.

When to apply: It’s recommended to apply at least 72 hours before your flight.

Duration and extensions: An ETA is valid for up to five years or until your passport expires. It allows stays of up to six months per visit. You can apply for a visitor record extension through IRCC while in Canada.

Entries: The ETA is issued for multiple entries during its validity period.

Ports of entry: The ETA is strictly for air travel. It's not required for entry by land (from the US) or sea, though proper travel documents are still mandatory.

Delivery format: The authorization is electronically linked to your passport. You don't need to print anything; airline staff scans your passport to confirm the ETA's validity.

Canada Advance CBSA Declaration

Purpose: The Advance CBSA Declaration is a digital tool used to submit customs and immigration declarations before arrival to save time at the border.

When to apply: You must submit the declaration within 72 hours before your flight arrives in Canada.

Duration and extensions: The declaration is valid for a single entry. It doesn't grant a stay period; that depends on your underlying visa or ETA status.

Entries: A new declaration must be submitted for every trip to Canada.

Ports of entry: It's currently available only at major international airports, including Toronto (YYZ), Vancouver (YVR), Montréal (YUL), and Calgary (YYC). It's not available for land or sea crossings.

Delivery format: You receive a digital confirmation and reference number via email. Upon arrival, you scan your passport at an airport kiosk or eGate to retrieve and certify your pre-filled declaration.

Most foreign nationals must obtain either a Visitor Visa (TRV) or an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before traveling to Canada for tourism, business, study, or work. US citizens and US permanent residents (green card holders) are exempt from both requirements and don't need a visa for stays up to six months. Canada doesn't offer a traditional Visa on Arrival (VoA) service for most travelers.

Travelers entering Canada by air can submit an Advance CBSA Declaration within 72 hours before arrival to speed up processing at major airports.

General Canada visa requirements are:

  • Passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival

  • Recent digital photo (meeting IRCC specifications)

  • Travel details (such as flight itinerary, hotel bookings, or an invitation letter)

Proof of sufficient financial means for the duration of stay (e.g., bank statements or pay stubs)

  • Additional supporting documents depending on visa type (e.g., family ties to home country, medical exam for long stays, or business registration for business visitors)
