Nigerian visa policy for British citizens

UK citizens need a visa to visit Nigeria for tourism, business, or visiting family. Most travelers use the Nigerian eVisa system, which must be applied for and approved online before departure. While multiple-entry options exist, a standard Tourist eVisa allows for a stay of up to 90 days.

UK travelers need two Nigerian entry documents:

  • Nigeria eVisa: A mandatory digital authorization required for entry. It can be used for tourism or for visiting family. The eVisa is valid for 3 months from the date of issue and allows a single entry. The maximum stay is 30 days. It can be used to enter by air, land, or sea at specific points of entry.

  • Nigeria ED Card: A mandatory digital arrival form that must be completed at least 72 hours before arrival. This system replaced paper forms in early 2026. You must present the generated QR code to immigration officers to clear border control.

General Nigerian entry requirements for UK travelers are:

  • UK passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date
  • Passport photo
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Evidence of sufficient financial funds for the duration of the stay
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or host address)
  • Invitation letter from a Nigerian host or company (including a copy of the host's passport or CAC certificate for business)
  • Yellow fever vaccination certificate
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation

"I would recommend this service to anyone who is applying for an e visa. The process using i visa service was quick and easy to follow and great support if needed. The turnaround for the approved visa was excellent. I thought it would take a day or two, but my application was dispositioned in less than two hours from submittal. Great job I visa"

Frequently asked questions about getting the Nigeria visa with a United Kingdom passport

UK citizens can apply through the official Nigeria Immigration Service portal or through iVisa for a simplified application process. The process is entirely online.

As of early 2026, Nigeria has completely replaced paper arrival forms with the digital Landing Card. All travelers must register within 72 hours before arrival. After submitting your travel and health details, you'll receive a QR code. This code is mandatory for immigration clearance at all international airports, and you'll likely be asked for it before boarding your flight in the UK.

A standard tourist eVisa allows for a maximum stay of 90 days per visit. While some visas are valid for multiple entries over 6 or 12 months, you're generally restricted to a total of 180 days within a single calendar year. If you intend to stay longer than 90 days in one trip, you cannot use an eVisa and must apply for a specific long-term visa at a Nigerian Mission (like the OIS centers in London, Leicester, or Fleet) before you travel.

Yes. While the eVisa is your legal permission to enter, your entry is contingent on health requirements. An International certificate of vaccination for yellow fever is mandatory for all travelers to Nigeria. Immigration and health officials at the border will check for this certificate alongside your eVisa and Landing Card. Failure to produce a valid certificate can result in a denial of entry or mandatory vaccination at the airport.

No. A business eVisa only permits non-remunerative activities such as attending meetings, conferences, or negotiations. You cannot legally take up employment, provide consultancy for a fee, or engage in any hands-on work. If your visit involves technical work (e.g., machine repair or project management), you must apply for a Temporary Work Permit (TWP) eVisa, which requires approval from the Comptroller General of Immigration in Abuja before you travel.
