Who it's for
Travelers whose nationality does not have visa-free access to the European Union and who want to visit Romania for a short stay. Everyone travels on their own visa, minors and infants included.
Permitted activities
Tourism, business, and transit. It does not allow you to work or to live in Romania, and the consulate will want to see evidence of why you are traveling and that you intend to return home.
Where it's valid
You can enter at any external border of the Schengen area. The visa covers Romania and the other Schengen member states, not just your first stop.
Delivery format
This is an embassy visa, so it is stamped into your passport rather than sent as a PDF. You attend an appointment at the consulate or visa center to give biometric data and hand over your documents, and the government fee is paid there.
Where you apply
The file goes to the consulate of the country you are spending the most time in. If your stays are equal, it goes to the consulate of the country you enter first.
Validity
Valid for 90 days
Entry
Single entry
Length of stay
Stay up to 90 days per entry
Processing time
Get it in as fast as 45 days

  • After eVisa refusing to accept my first picture I provided for technical issues, I took and sent several selfies also not good enough. Eventually, the first picture was accepted and used to create the 45x35 mm Romanian government compliant digital picture. Happy it was done but could have been easier.

Still have questions?

Our visa experts are available 24/7 on chat, email, and WhatsApp.

Do I need a Romania Schengen Visa?

If your nationality requires a visa to enter Romania and is not on the visa-free list, you’ll need a Schengen Visa to enter Romania and all other Schengen member states for tourism or business.

Can I apply for a Romania Schengen Visa online?

While you can start the process and fill out the application form online through iVisa, the Schengen rules require you to attend an in-person appointment for biometric collection (fingerprints and photo) and to submit your physical documents at a consulate or visa center.

How will I receive the Romania Schengen Visa?

After the authorities in Romania process your application, you will receive your passport back with the visa sticker attached, ready for your trip. You can also find a copy of your Schengen Visa confirmation in your iVisa dashboard if applied through us.

How long can I stay in Romania?

The standard short-stay visa (Type C) allows you to stay for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period in the Schengen Area. This applies to the entire Schengen Zone, not just Romania. If you have a multiple-entry visa, you must still adhere to the 90/180-day rule.

Can I extend my stay in Romania?

Schengen Visa extensions are rarely granted. You can generally only extend your visa in cases of force majeure (e.g., natural disasters or flight cancellations), humanitarian reasons, or serious personal reasons that prevent you from leaving. You must apply at the local Foreigners' Authority before your visa expires.

What is the processing time of a Romania Schengen Visa?

The standard processing time is 15 calendar days from the moment your application reaches the Romania Consulate. However, it can take up to 45 days during peak seasons or if additional document verification is required. We recommend applying at least 2 months before your trip.

Do children/minors need a Romania Schengen Visa?

Yes. Every traveler, including infants and minors, requires their own visa. For minors, the application must be signed by both parents/legal guardians, and a birth certificate must be provided along with a notarized travel consent form if the child is traveling alone or with only one parent. You can use iVisa’s "Add another person" feature to easily manage applications for the whole family in one session, saving time and effort.

What is the difference between a Schengen Visa and ETIAS?

The Schengen Visa is for travelers who are not visa-exempt. The ETIAS (launching late 2026) is a digital travel authorization for citizens of visa-exempt countries (like the US, UK, and Canada). If you currently need a visa to enter Romania, you will continue to need a Schengen Visa.
