No. As of 2022, lawful permanent residents of the United States (Green Card holders) are exempt from the ETA requirement for all methods of travel to Canada. You must instead present a valid passport from your country of nationality and your original, valid Green Card (or equivalent proof of status) to board your flight and enter the country.
No. The Canada ETA is specifically an air-entry requirement. If you are a citizen of a visa-exempt country arriving by car, bus, train, or boat (including a cruise ship), you do not need an ETA. You only need to present your valid passport at the border.
No. Canadian citizens, including dual citizens, are not eligible to apply for an ETA. You must travel with a valid Canadian passport to board your flight. If you have an emergency trip and don’t have a Canadian passport, you may be eligible to apply for a special authorization to fly with your foreign visa-exempt passport.
An ETA is an entry authorization, not a status document. If you're already in Canada and want to stay longer than the 6 months usually granted upon entry, you must apply for a Visitor Record before your current status expires. You do not need to apply for a new ETA to stay longer, as the ETA is only for the act of flying into the country.
Yes. Your Canada ETA is digitally linked to your specific passport. If you renew your passport or change it for any reason (e.g., name change or lost document), your current ETA becomes invalid. You must apply for a brand-new ETA using your new passport details before you can fly to Canada.
The Canada ETA is usually processed quickly. With iVisa, you can get your Canada ETA in as little as 3 hours (depending on your application and chosen delivery speed).
We recommend applying at least 5 days before your departure date to account for any unexpected government delays.
Yes. There are no age exemptions for the ETA. Every traveler from a visa-exempt country, including infants and minor children, must have their own individual ETA linked to their own valid passport.
If denied, you will receive an email from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) outlining the reasons for the refusal. You can usually re-apply by submitting a completely new application with corrected information.
iVisa offers denial protection. In some cases, our experts can help you reapply for the eVisa, or you may need to apply for a traditional sticker visa at a Canadian consulate.
No. The Canada ETA only allows you to visit for tourism, business meetings, or transit. If you intend to work or study (for more than six months), you must apply for the appropriate work or study permit. However, if your permit application is approved, an ETA is usually issued to you automatically along with your permit.
