What is the Canada Visitor Visa?
The Canada Visitor Visa, officially known as the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is a document that allows visitors to enter and stay in Canada for a short period, typically up to 6 months.
Introduced by the Canadian government, this visa is intended to regulate the entry of tourists, business travelers, individuals seeking medical attention, or those visiting family and friends, ensuring their visit aligns with Canadian laws and safety measures.
We offer a Multiple entry visa that allows you to enter and leave Canada multiple times until it expires. It's your ticket to experiencing Canada's magnificent landscapes, vibrant cities, and welcoming communities.
What can you do with the Canada Visitor Visa?
With the Canada Visitor Visa, you have the flexibility to explore all that Canada has to offer. You can:
-
Explore Canada, from its bustling cities like Toronto and Vancouver to the breathtaking landscapes of the Rocky Mountains and Niagara Falls.
-
Visit family or friends who live in Canada, strengthening cross-border relationships.
-
Conduct business activities such as attending meetings, conferences, and seminars. However, you cannot enter the Canadian labor market.
-
Engage in short-term study programs lasting less than six months.
-
Seek medical treatment with access to Canada's world-class healthcare facilities.
What can you not do with the Canada Visitor Visa?
While the Canada Visitor Visa offers many possibilities, there are certain limitations to consider. With this visa, you can’t:
-
Work: The Canada Visitor Visa does not permit you to work in Canada. If you intend to work, you must apply for a Work Permit.
-
Study long-term: If your course lasts more than six months, you'll need a Study Permit.
-
Stay indefinitely: The Visitor Visa is temporary and usually allows you to stay up to 6 months at a time. To extend your stay, you must apply for an extension before your visa expires.
-
Apply for Canadian citizenship or Permanent Resident status: The Visitor Visa is a temporary visa and does not lead directly to obtaining Canadian citizenship or Permanent Resident status.
Remember, it's crucial to comply with the visa regulations to ensure your visit is enjoyable and hassle-free.
Who can apply for a Canada Visitor Visa?
The Canada Visitor Visa is open to individuals worldwide who meet specific criteria.
Here are some requirements:
-
Be a citizen of a country that requires a visa to visit Canada. Canada has a Visa Waiver Program with certain countries whose citizens do not require a visa for short stays. If you are not from a Visa Waiver Program country, you need to apply for the Visitor Visa.
-
Have a valid passport: Your passport should have at least one blank page for the visa stamp and be valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date from Canada.
-
Be in good health: You might need a medical examination.
-
Have no criminal history or convictions for breaching immigration law.
-
Can convince an immigration officer that you have ties—such as a job, home, or family—that will take you back to your home country.
-
Intend to leave Canada at the end of your visit.
-
Have enough money for your stay: The amount of money you will need can vary with the circumstances of the visit, your location, and how long you will stay.
Who is eligible for the Canada Visitor Visa?
Many nationalities can apply for this visa. However, some may not need a Visitor Visa. Use our convenient Visa Checker Tool to see if you need one and apply instantly.
Please note: Canada does not issue temporary resident visas (TRV) to permanent residents (PR) of Canada.
Also, Ukrainian citizens may be eligible for Canada-Ukraine authorization for emergency travel (CUAET) to come to Canada temporarily. Unfortunately, we don’t offer this document currently. Contact your local Canadian embassy or consulate for more information.
Visa-exempt: Who doesn't need to apply for a Canada Visitor Visa?
Specific individuals are exempt from applying for the Canada Visitor Visa based on their country of citizenship due to agreements between their countries and Canada. The list includes countries like the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and most countries in the European Union, among others.
However, while citizens of these countries do not need a Visitor Visa, they must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) if they travel to Canada by air. An eTA is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals visiting Canada by air, and it is electronically linked to your passport.
The list of visa-exempt countries is extensive, and for the most accurate and up-to-date information, it's best to use our Visa Checker Tool to confirm which document you need.
Do minors have to apply for the Canada Visitor Visa?
Minors and children from eligible countries must also apply for the Canada Visitor Visa. Parents or legal guardians must apply on their behalf. It is required to submit extra documents to apply for children:
-
Birth certificate
-
Passport

Make sure to visit Canada before your passport expires and that it’ll stay valid during your trip. Otherwise, you'll need to apply for a new visa.
Can I extend my Canada Visitor Visa?
If you want to extend your stay in Canada, you should apply at least 30 days before your status expires.
For the steps to apply, read the Canadian government’s guide to how to apply to extend your stay as a visitor.

Differences between Canada Visitor Visa and Canada ETA
When planning a trip to Canada, it's crucial to understand the differences between the two main types of entry documents: the Canada Visitor Visa and the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).
These cater to different traveler groups based on nationality and mode of travel.
- Canada Visitor Visa: This is intended for citizens from countries not part of Canada's Visa Waiver Program.
It allows the holder to visit Canada for tourism, business meetings, family visits, or short-term studies. This visa must be stamped in your passport, and the application process requires gathering more detailed documentation and a visa appointment.
- Canada ETA: The ETA is an entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals traveling to or transiting through Canada by air.
It's electronically linked to your passport and is valid for up to five years, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. An approved ETA permits multiple entries into Canada for up to six months.
Remember, no matter which documents you need, we offer a simplified process for securing your travel documentation.
