We've written this guide to help you better understand the ins and outs of the Japan Tourist Visa. Our mission is to assist you in navigating the visa application process efficiently so you can look forward to everything the Land of the Rising Sun has to offer.

Do Ukrainian citizens need a Japanese visa?

The Japan Tourist Visa, also known as the Temporary Visitor Visa, is necessary for Ukrainians planning to visit Japan. This visa allows for tourism, visiting friends or family, or other short-term non-business activities in the country.

Depending on your specific circumstances, you can get a single-entry visa valid for 3 months with a maximum stay of 15 or 30 days, or a multiple-entry visa valid for 1 or 5 years with each visit not exceeding 90 days.

It’s important to note that you can only apply for a Japan Tourist Visa in your home country or in a country where you’re legally residing. If you’re visiting another country and try to apply from there, you will likely get rejected.

To apply for a Japan Tourist Visa, you’ll need to have the following documents:

  • Valid passport: Must have at least six months of validity remaining from when you enter Japan, with at least two blank pages for stamping.

  • Completed visa application form: It needs to be accurately filled out and signed.

  • Passport-size photograph: A recent color photograph (within the last six months) that meets the visa specifications.

  • Detailed travel itinerary: A detailed plan of the trip, including dates, cities to be visited, and accommodations.

  • Proof of financial means: Bank statements or other documents like income tax returns to demonstrate your ability to finance your stay in Japan.

  • Flight reservations: Proof of round-trip flight booking or onward travel from Japan.

  • Accommodation proof: Details of hotel reservations or a letter of invitation from a host in Japan.

  • Additional documents: Depending on the purpose of your trip, you may need to provide documents like an employment letter or proof of school enrollment.

One of the requirements for a Japan Tourist Visa is attending a visa interview at the nearest Japanese embassy or consulate, where you’ll submit your visa application and pay the visa fee.

How to apply for a Japan Tourist Visa from Ukraine

  1. Contact the Japanese embassy (details below) to confirm whether they accept individual applications or you’ll have to apply through an accredited travel agency. You can also make an appointment to submit your visa application.

  2. Gather the required documents for your visa application.

  3. Download the application form from the Japanese embassy in Ukraine website. Carefully fill out all the required fields. Make sure the information you’ve provided matches the details in your documents.

  4. Visit the Japanese embassy or travel agency, submit your application, and pay the visa fee.

  5. Wait for the application to be processed, which typically takes 5 working days. However, it can take longer if additional documentation is needed or if you apply during a Japanese holiday.

  6. Collect your passport from the embassy or travel agency. If your visa is approved, the passport will have the visa affixed to it.

When you arrive in Japan, an immigration officer will review your Japan Tourist Visa and the documents confirming the purpose of your visit. They will then stamp your passport with a Landing Permit, which takes the place of the visa.
