- Who it's for
- Citizens of visa-exempt countries who are flying to Canada for a short visit. Travelers who need a visitor visa instead are not eligible, and permanent residents of Canada follow a different route.
- Permitted activities
- Tourism, visiting family and friends, business meetings and transit through a Canadian airport. Working, studying and living in Canada are not permitted on this authorization.
- How you travel
- Required for arrivals by air. Travelers arriving by land, rail or sea are exempt and present a valid passport on arrival instead. A valid eTA must be in place before you board your flight to Canada.
- Delivery format
- There is no sticker or stamp in your passport. The authorization is linked electronically to the passport you applied with and confirmed by email, so travel on that same passport.
- Good to know
- Every traveler needs their own eTA, minors included. Because it is tied to your passport, a new passport means a new application even if the old authorization has time left on it.
- Validity
- Valid for 5 years
- Entry
- Multiple entry
- Length of stay
- Stay up to 6 months per entry
- Processing time
- Get it in as fast as 2 hours

Do I need a Canada eTA if I have a US Green Card?
No. As of 2022, lawful permanent residents of the United States (Green Card holders) are exempt from the eTA requirement for all methods of travel to Canada. You must instead present a valid passport from your country of nationality and your original, valid Green Card (or equivalent proof of status) to board your flight and enter the country.
Is a Canada eTA required for transit?
Yes. If you are from a visa-exempt country and are transiting through a Canadian airport to another destination, you must hold a valid Canada eTA. This applies even if your layover is short and you do not intend to leave the airport's international transit area.
Do I need a Canada eTA if I enter Canada by land or sea?
No. The Canada eTA is specifically an air-entry requirement. If you are a citizen of a visa-exempt country arriving by car, bus, train, or boat (including a cruise ship), you do not need an eTA. You only need to present your valid passport at the border.
I'm a dual Canadian citizen; can I apply for an eTA with my other passport?
No. Canadian citizens, including dual citizens, are not eligible to apply for an eTA. You must travel with a valid Canadian passport to board your flight. If you have an emergency trip and don't have a Canadian passport, you may be eligible to apply for a special authorization to fly with your foreign visa-exempt passport.
Can I extend my stay in Canada with an eTA?
An eTA is an entry authorization, not a status document. If you're already in Canada and want to stay longer than the 6 months usually granted upon entry, you must apply for a Visitor Record before your current status expires. You do not need to apply for a new eTA to stay longer, as the eTA is only for the act of flying into the country.
Does my Canada eTA expire if I get a new passport?
Yes. Your Canada eTA is digitally linked to your specific passport. If you renew your passport or change it for any reason (e.g., name change or lost document), your current eTA becomes invalid. You must apply for a brand-new eTA using your new passport details before you can fly to Canada.
How long does the Canada eTA processing take?
The Canada eTA is usually processed quickly. We recommend applying at least 5 days before your departure date to account for any unexpected government delays.
Do children/minors need their own Canada eTA?
Yes. There are no age exemptions for the eTA. Every traveler from a visa-exempt country, including infants and minor children, must have their own individual eTA linked to their own valid passport.
What happens if my Canada eTA application is denied?
If denied, you will receive an email from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) outlining the reasons for the refusal. You can usually re-apply by submitting a completely new application with corrected information. iVisa offers denial protection. In some cases, our experts can help you reapply for the eTA, or you may need to apply for a traditional sticker visa at a Canadian consulate.
Can I work or study in Canada with an eTA?
No. The Canada eTA only allows you to visit for tourism, business meetings, or transit. If you intend to work or study (for more than six months), you must apply for the appropriate work or study permit. However, if your permit application is approved, an eTA is usually issued to you automatically along with your permit.
