New Zealand Visa (ETA) requirements
Citizens of many countries, including the US, UK, Canada and most EU countries, can travel to New Zealand without applying for a visa in advance. If you're from one of these visa-waiver countries, you'll need an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before you travel.
An NZeTA covers holidays, visits to family and friends, business trips, transit and short courses lasting up to three months.
The NZeTA isn't a visa. It's an electronic travel authority linked to your passport that allows you to travel to New Zealand. When you arrive, a border officer will assess your entry and grant you a visitor visa.
New Zealand entry requirements
Requirements verified against official government sources
- An approved NZeTA, linked to the passport you're traveling on
- A passport valid for at least 3 months after the date you plan to leave New Zealand
- A return or onward ticket
- Proof you can support yourself: NZD 1,000 (~US$590) per month, or NZD 400 (~US$235) per month if your accommodation is already paid for
- A New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD), completed before you travel. You don't need one if you're only transiting through Auckland.
Requirements may vary depending on nationality.
New Zealand Visa (ETA) pricing and validity
One all-in price. The checkout total includes our service fee, expert review, and support — no surprises.
- Who it's for
- Citizens of New Zealand's visa-waiver countries and territories, Australian permanent residents, and cruise or cargo-ship passengers of any nationality. Australian citizens traveling on an Australian passport need neither this nor a visa.
- Permitted activities
- Holidays, visiting family and friends, business visitor activities such as meetings and conferences, short courses of study, arriving by cruise ship, and transiting through Auckland. It does not cover work, longer study, or coming for medical consultation or treatment.
- Entry points
- Air and sea, since New Zealand has no land border. Auckland International Airport is the only airport with a transit area, so a traveler routing through any other New Zealand airport is visiting rather than transiting and has to request the authority on that basis.
- Delivery format
- An electronic authority linked to your passport, confirmed by email. There is no stamp, sticker or label, and you present the confirmation at check-in. You must travel on the same passport the request was made with.
- Good to know
- Every traveler needs their own, infants included, and a child endorsed on a parent's passport is requested using the parent's passport details. The authority does not guarantee entry: the visitor visa itself is granted by an officer at the border. It also does not replace the separate New Zealand Traveller Declaration.
- Validity
- Valid for 2 years
- Entry
- Multiple entry
- Length of stay
- Stay up to 90 days per entry
- Processing time
- Get it in as fast as 15 minutes

Going to New Zealand for the very first time. Didn't know if we need a visa. Once I learn about iVisa, my experience of booking for 4 people was one of the easiest.
At 77 years of age, my computer skills are rudimentary to say the least. The Visa Customer Support was second to none. Customer Support guided me through a lengthy and for me complicated process until completion. Before starting the Visa process make sure that you have suitable facial photographs to download to the form.
Straight forward to do, and the response was quick to the request.
They mentioned a levy on tourists so when I was charged extra besides the visa charge I thought it was for the levy instead of faster service which showed other extra charges for fast service.
We found the process of applying for a transit visa relatively easy enabling us to continue our onward journey without any delays or problems.
Very easy to do and the progression of the process from iVisa timely and clear.
Everything was easy to do online. At one stage I was surprised because I had to bring up some fotos online. Because I had no fotos, I had to stop and do it all again the next day. It would be helpful to give a hint at the beginning of the applicationform.
Simple and easy to navigate and informative about the progress of the application.
it was fine experience but the necessity of providing a review was not appreciated.
The process was easy & smooth throughout. I only waited minutes for my approval email. I will use evisa from now on when traveling internationally.

Our visa experts are available 24/7 on chat, email, and WhatsApp.
What is the NZeTA?
The NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) is a digital travel authority that visa-waiver travelers need before they fly or sail to New Zealand. You can request yours through iVisa in a few minutes, and once it's approved it's linked electronically to your passport.
The NZeTA isn't a visa. It lets you travel to New Zealand without applying for a visa first, and a border officer grants your visitor visa when you arrive.
Who needs a New Zealand ETA?
You need an NZeTA to visit New Zealand if you're:
- a citizen of a visa-waiver country, such as the US, Canada, the UK and most EU countries
- an Australian permanent resident
- a cruise ship passenger, whatever your nationality
- a citizen of China or a Pacific Islands Forum country traveling from Australia on an eligible Australian visa
Australian citizens don't need an NZeTA or a visa. If none of these apply to you, you'll need a New Zealand Visitor Visa instead.
How much does the NZeTA cost?
With iVisa, you'll see the full price before you pay. It's made up of:
- the government fees: the NZeTA request fee, from NZD 17 (~US$10), plus the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of NZD 100 (~US$59) that most travelers pay
- iVisa's service fee, which covers our expert check of your request and support until it's approved
The government doesn't refund the IVL if your request is declined. Some travelers don't pay the IVL, such as transit passengers at Auckland Airport and citizens of many Pacific Island nations.
How do I apply for an NZeTA?
You can apply for your NZeTA online with iVisa in about 3 minutes:
- enter your passport and travel details
- add a photo of your face, and we'll check it meets New Zealand's standards
- choose your processing speed and pay
Our team checks your request for errors before it goes to Immigration New Zealand, and we'll email you as soon as it's approved. Traveling with others? Add everyone to the same order.
How will I receive the New Zealand ETA?
Once your New Zealand ETA is approved, you'll receive an email confirmation. The authority is digitally linked to your passport, so there's no physical sticker or paper document to carry.
We recommend keeping a digital copy of the confirmation on your phone, as you'll need to show it at check-in. If you applied with iVisa, you'll also find it in your iVisa dashboard.
How do I check my NZeTA status?
If you applied with iVisa, you can follow your NZeTA status anytime in your iVisa dashboard, and we'll email you as soon as there's an update.
If you requested it directly from the government, you can check your status on Immigration New Zealand's website with your NZeTA reference number, which starts with E and is in your acknowledgment email.
How long can I stay in New Zealand with an ETA?
You can stay for up to 3 months (90 days) per visit. If you're a UK citizen, you can stay for up to 6 months (180 days). The ETA itself is valid for two years and allows for multiple entries.
Whatever your nationality, you can't spend more than 6 months in New Zealand in any 12-month period.
How long does New Zealand ETA processing take?
With iVisa, you choose your processing speed at checkout, and the option you pick is shown with its delivery time before you pay.
Immigration New Zealand can take up to 72 hours to decide, and longer if it needs to run extra checks. We recommend applying at least three days before your departure date.
Do children/minors need a New Zealand ETA?
Yes. Every traveler, including infants and children, must have their own New Zealand ETA. iVisa makes it easy to apply for the whole family in one go by using the "Add another person" feature during the application.
Do I need the New Zealand ETA to transit?
Yes, if you're transiting as a visa-waiver citizen, an Australian permanent resident, or a traveler flying to or from Australia.
Transit is only possible through Auckland International Airport. You must stay in the transit area for no more than 24 hours, and you can't collect your bags or leave the airport. If you need to stay overnight, you'll need a visitor NZeTA or a visa instead.
What happens if my New Zealand ETA application is denied?
If your request is denied, you'll receive a notification. Denials are often due to simple typos, and sometimes to travel or criminal history. In some cases, our experts can help you reapply for the ETA, or apply for a Visitor Visa instead.
If you added Denial Protection to your order, a government rejection is refunded automatically.
What are the most common reasons a New Zealand ETA application is denied?
The most common New Zealand ETA rejection reasons include incorrect passport details, a photo that doesn't meet official standards, or failing to disclose required criminal or immigration history. iVisa's expert review and smart photo tool catch errors and automatically adjust your photo or selfie to meet New Zealand government standards before submission.
Can I extend my New Zealand ETA?
No, a New Zealand ETA can't be extended. To stay longer than your permitted 3 or 6 months, you'll need to apply for a visa. If you're already in New Zealand, apply for it before your current stay ends.
Which countries are visa-waiver countries for New Zealand?
If you have a passport from one of these 60 countries and territories, you can visit New Zealand without a visa, but you'll need an NZeTA before you travel:
- Europe: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and Vatican City
- The Americas: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico, the US and Uruguay
- Asia: Brunei, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan

Some conditions apply. Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania are for citizens only, Greek passports must be issued on or after 1 January 2006, and UK and Portuguese passport holders need the right to live permanently in that country. Hong Kong residents need an HKSAR or British National (Overseas) passport, Macau residents a Macau SAR passport, and Taiwan permanent residents a Taiwan passport.
If your country isn't on the list, you'll need a New Zealand Visitor Visa instead.
