US Visa for Germans

Updated on May 14, 2024

Are you a German citizen dreaming of exploring the vast landscapes of the USA, or perhaps you're planning a business trip to bustling New York City? Understanding the travel requirements is your first step toward a smooth and exciting journey.

Fill me in

Fortunately, German travellers benefit from the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), which allows for up to 90 days of travel in the U.S without a traditional visa, provided you obtain an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before departure.

We’ll guide you through the ESTA application process, outline when a visa might be necessary, and ensure you are fully prepared to meet the U.S. entry requirements. Here at iVisa, we strive to make getting your travel documents a hassle-free experience.

Do Germans need a visa to enter the US?

No, German citizens do not need a traditional visa for short visits (up to 90 days) for tourism or business purposes to the U.S. thanks to the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).

Instead, they must apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before departure, which can be quickly processed online.

For longer stays or for purposes such as work or study, a U.S. visa is required. The type of visa depends on the specific reason for the extended stay, and applications must be made at a U.S. Consulate or Embassy with an interview process.

What is a Visa Waiver Program (VWP)?

The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) is administered by the DHS (Dept. of Homeland Security) and enables eligible citizens or nationals of designated countries to travel to the United States for tourism or business (for stays of up to 90 days Per Entry) without first obtaining a visa.

What is an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA)?

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is an automated system that assists in determining eligibility to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) and whether such travel poses any law enforcement or security risk.

Upon completion of an ESTA application, a traveller is notified of his or her eligibility to travel to the United States under the VWP.

Individuals who possess a valid visa will still be able to travel to the United States on that visa for the purpose for which it was issued. Individuals travelling on valid visas are not required to apply for an ESTA.

How long is the ESTA valid?

The ESTA is valid for 2 years after issued or until the associated passport expires, whichever date is sooner.

With an ESTA, German visitors can stay in the United States for a maximum of 90 days Per Entry. All visits are strictly limited to business or tourism, so you CANNOT seek paid work or employment.
