If you’re planning a trip to Australia, it’s important to know which visa you should apply for.

Australia is a prime destination for many travelers. Whether you're looking to snorkel in the Great Barrier Reef, wander through downtown Sydney, or attend a business meeting in Melbourne, there’s something for everyone.

Fill me in

We’re here to help you understand the Australia Visitor Visa, including who is eligible and how to apply for it. Let’s get started on your travel preparations to the Land Down Under.

What is the Australia Visitor Visa?

The Australia Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) is a short-stay visa that allows you to enter Australia for holiday, recreation, or short-term non-work purposes. This visa must be applied for before entering the country and is digitally linked to your passport.

What can you do with the Australia Visitor Visa?

  • Engage in tourism activities, such as sightseeing, recreational activities, and exploring Australia's iconic landmarks.

  • Visit family or friends residing in Australia.

  • Study or undertake a training course that lasts up to 3 months.

  • Visit the country while on a cruise.

What can you not do with the Australia Visitor Visa?

  • Engage in any form of employment or paid work.

  • Take part in business-related activities like conferences, trade fairs or seminars.

  • Undertake a course of study that exceeds 3 months.

  • Live in Australia through frequent or successive visits.

  • Stay indefinitely – you must leave before your visa expires.

  • Get medical treatment in the country.

Who requires the Australia Visitor Visa?

Nearly all nationalities need to apply for an Australia Visitor Visa, including Brazil, India, and Saudi Arabia. To find out if you’re eligible for one, select the nationality of your passport at the top of this page and select your destination as Australia.

To be eligible for the Australia Visitor Visa, the following requirements must be met:

  • You must be outside Australia at the time of visa application and decision.

  • You’re not currently in possession of another Australian visa.

  • You must meet the health and character requirements.

  • You must be a genuine visitor with intentions to stay temporarily in Australia and follow the conditions of your visa.

  • You must clear any debts owed to the Australian government or have a plan to pay them back.

  • You must possess sufficient funds to support yourself for the duration of your stay in Australia.

  • If the traveler is under the age of 18, visiting Australia has to be in their best interests or they risk a denial.

Visa-exempt: Who doesn't need to apply for an Australia Visitor Visa?

  • Citizens of countries that qualify for an Australia ETA or an Australia eVisitor Visa.

  • New Zealand citizens. They are granted a visa on arrival (Special Category Visa (subclass 444) (SCV)) once they enter Australia.

  • Citizens of China. They need to apply for a Visitor Visa (subclass 600) - Frequent Traveler stream instead.

  • Business travelers. They need to apply for a Visitor Visa (subclass 600) - Business Visitor stream instead.

For up-to-date information about visa exemptions for Australia, you can visit the Department of Home Affairs website or contact the nearest Australian embassy or consulate.

Do children also require the Australia Visitor Visa?

Yes, children intending to travel to Australia must also apply for the Australia Visitor Visa. Each child, regardless of age, must have their own visa.

Australia Visitor Visa validity: How long can I stay in Australia?

The Visitor Visa can be granted as a single-entry or multiple-entry permit. It is valid for 12 months and allows a stay of 3, 6, or 12 months, which is determined on a case-by-case basis.

It’s possible to get a visa that’s valid for more than 12 months if you are the parent or step-parent of an Australian citizen or permanent resident and meet all the criteria for the visa. However, you can’t stay in the country for more than 12 months in total in any 18-month period.

Can I extend my Australia Visitor Visa?

No, it’s not possible to extend an Australia Visitor Visa. You’ll have to apply for a new one while in the country as long as your current visa doesn’t have a condition that prevents further stay.

Australia Visitor Visa required documents

To get an Australia Visitor Visa, the following documents are typically required from visa applicants:

  • A recent, colored passport photo that meets the guidelines laid out by the Australian government.

  • A scanned copy of the bio-data page of your passport and all the stamped visa and endorsement pages. Your passport should be valid for the total period of your stay in Australia or at least 6 months beyond your intended arrival date in the country.

  • A copy of your national identification card.

  • Evidence that you are financially capable of funding your stay in Australia, like pay slips, tax records, or itemized personal bank statements for a 3-month period.

  • An invitation letter if you’re visiting a relative or friend in Australia.

  • Your travel itinerary that shows what you plan to do in Australia.

  • Documentary proof of ties to your home country, such as a title deed, a letter from your employer, a school enrolment letter, a marriage certificate, or children’s birth certificates.

  • Evidence that you meet the character requirements, like a police clearance certificate.

For applicants who are under 18, additional documents will be requested:

  • A copy of the child’s birth certificate showing the names of both parents.

  • Proof of legal guardianship if the biological parents don’t have legal guardianship over the child.

  • Certified copies of adoption papers or parental court orders (if applicable).

  • If the parent(s)/guardian is not traveling with the child, they will need to complete a statutory declaration allowing the child to visit the country.

For a detailed breakdown of the documents required for minors, please visit the Department of Home Affairs website.

Once your visa is approved, you’ll receive a visa grant notification letter by email that explains the conditions of your visa, including the period of validity and entry requirements. You should keep a digital copy on your mobile device and print it out as well before your trip to Australia.

Last year I had an amazing trip to Sydney on a single-entry visa and I totally fell in love with Australia. Now I’m planning to go back and visit Melbourne. I want to apply for another Australia Visitor Visa. Do I need to submit supporting documents all over again like last time? Or now that they have my details, it will be easier to apply for a second visa?

September 10 2024
When applying for another Australia Visitor Visa, you'll need to submit supporting documents again, even if you've previously been granted a visa. Each application is treated as a new case, and you must provide all required documents, such as proof of your identity, a copy of your passport, and proof of your reason for visiting. This is because each visit might have different circumstances and needs to be assessed independently.

I recently got a multiple-entry visa that started on September 1st 2024 and expires on September 1st 2025. It allows me to stay for 3 months for each visit, but no work and a max of 3 months of study. I want to make sure I understand the expiry date for the visa. If I land in Australia on August 31st or September 1st, 2025, can I still stay for the full three months until December 1st, even though my visa will have technically expired?

iVisa
September 19 2024
For a multiple-entry visa that expires on September 1st, 2025, you must enter Australia before or on this date. However, even if you enter on the last day the visa is valid (September 1st), you can stay for the duration permitted by the visa, which, in your case, is up to three months. So, yes, you can stay until December 1st, 2025, provided your entry into Australia is on or before September 1st. You can check your visa details and conditions on the VEVO section of the Australian Department of Home Affairs website.

I’m filling in my Australia visitor visa application and am at the point where I need to provide proof of my planned activities. I’ve got all my flights and a few tours booked already. Is it enough to just upload the printouts of these bookings, or do I need to provide something more detailed to support my application?
logo
iVisa
September 23 2024
For your Australia visitor visa application, uploading printouts of your flight bookings and tour reservations is typically sufficient. However, providing additional details such as an itinerary or an invitation letter from someone in Australia, if applicable, can strengthen your application. The more proof you provide to show the purpose and duration of your stay, the better it supports your visitor visa application.

I am currently living/staying in Italy, a country that I am not a citizen of because I am a Philippines passport holder. I am staying here with my husband till Christmas while waiting for my Permit to Stay card valid for 5 years in Italy. My husband and I would like to go home to our house in Australia and spend 2 months from February. Where should I address my application? To Australian consulate in Italy or Manila embassy?

October 25 2024
Hi Kathy, That’s a good question, and I understand how it can be a little confusing when you’re temporarily staying in another country. Since you’re living in Italy right now, you don’t need to submit your application to a specific consulate or embassy. You can apply for the Australia Visitor Visa (subclass 600) entirely online. When filling out your application, make sure to mention your current residence in Italy and provide any supporting documents that reflect your status there. This could include proof of your residence or your Permit to Stay application. Also, ensure you submit any documents showing your ties to Australia, like proof of property ownership or other relevant details about your planned stay. It’s always a good idea to apply well ahead of time since processing can take a few weeks.

We would like to apply for a three-year valid visa to visit our children who are permanent residents in Australia from time to time. We do not have tickets to fly there yet but are hoping to obtain tickets within the following week. We have been to Australia two years ago and have ImmiAccounts.

Hi June, It's wonderful that you're planning to visit your children in Australia. If you apply through our platform, you can get a Visitor Visa that’s valid for up to 12 months. There’s an Australia Visitor Visa option that’s valid for 3 years or more: the Frequent Traveller stream. However, it’s only for select nationalities, and, unfortunately, South Africa isn’t one of them. The good news is that you don’t need to have purchased flight tickets to apply for an Australia Visitor Visa. Instead, you can provide a proposed travel itinerary that can strengthen your application. Ensure you include details about your planned visit, evidence of your relationship with your children, and proof of sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay. It’s also a great idea to provide evidence of your previous trip to Australia, such as your old visa details, as this demonstrates a history of compliance with visa conditions. If you're ready to start your application, click on the "Apply Now" button on this page.

Our Australian visa was just refused with no valid reason except that insufficient information was provided for our holiday from 15-22 January 2025. No guidance on a reapplication, or can we update the existing application, and what happens to our payments for both the visa and biometrics?
logo
iVisa
November 18 2024
Hi Anisha, We’re sorry to hear that your visa was refused. It can be frustrating, especially without clear feedback. When a visa is refused due to insufficient information, it often means the supporting documents didn’t fully meet the requirements. Unfortunately, the application fees for the visa and biometrics are non-refundable, even in the case of a refusal. You won’t be able to update an existing application, but you can submit a new one. For the reapplication, we recommend carefully reviewing the refusal letter to identify any areas where more information is needed. This may involve providing more detailed information about your travel plans, stronger evidence of your ties to South Africa, or additional financial documentation. We offer a paid visa service with an expert review process that can help avoid future denials. If you have more questions, don't hesitate to get in touch with our customer support team.

I would like a friend from Vietnam to visit me for 3 months. Can I state in a support letter that I will support her financially while she’s visiting?
logo
iVisa
November 18 2024
Hi Sada, Yes, you can absolutely include in your support letter that you’ll be providing financial support for your friend’s stay. This can make her Visitor Visa (subclass 600) application stronger, as it shows she’ll have sufficient resources during her visit. Make sure your letter includes details about your relationship with your friend, the purpose and duration of her visit, a statement that you will cover her expenses, such as accommodation, meals, and travel within Australia, and specifics about the financial support you'll provide. Including evidence of your financial capacity, like recent bank statements or proof of income, can further show your financial stability.

Can I visit Australia if there is any PTPTN study loan pending?
logo
iVisa
November 21 2024
Hi Kallaivani, Planning a trip to Australia is exciting. Having a pending PTPTN study loan shouldn’t automatically prevent you from applying for an Australia Visitor Visa. What matters most for your application is demonstrating that you have the financial capacity to support your trip and a clear intention to return to Malaysia after your visit. When you apply, be sure to include evidence of sufficient funds, like bank statements, payslips, or proof of sponsorship if someone else is helping cover your trip. This will assure the immigration authorities that you can support yourself during your visit without financial difficulties. It’s important to also provide documents showing ties to Malaysia, such as property ownership, employment, or family responsibilities. As long as you can show that you meet the visa requirements, your study loan shouldn’t impact the outcome of your application.
