Australia, a land of stunning beaches, unique wildlife, and vibrant cities, is calling. With the Australia Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), traveling to this dream destination has never been easier.

We make the Australia ETA process seamless and straightforward. Our efficient online platform and user-friendly mobile app are designed to take the hassle out of your travel preparations.

Fill me in

What is the Australia ETA?

The Australia ETA is an electronic travel authorization issued to eligible travelers who want to visit Australia for short stays.

And here's the best part: the entire process is online, quick, and hassle-free. No embassy visits or queues at the airport when you arrive in the country.

What can I do with the ETA?

The Australia ETA allows you to:

  • Travel as a tourist.

  • Visit family or friends.

  • Visit for business, including making business inquiries, attending conferences, or participating in trade fairs.

  • Study or train for up to 3 months (if your main purpose is studying, opt for a student visa instead).

What can’t I do with the ETA?

You can’t:

  • Train in childcare, healthcare, or for professions like a doctor or nurse.

  • Sell directly to the public in Australia.

  • Take up paid employment in Australia.

  • Live in Australia.

Eligibility criteria for the Australia ETA

Besides nationality, you must meet the following criteria to be eligible for the ETA:

  • Be a genuine visitor: You will visit Australia for a temporary stay and obey any condition or stay period attached to your ETA.

  • Be in good health: If you plan to use the Australian health care or hospital environments, you should apply for a Australia Visitor Visa (subclass 600) instead.

  • Be of good character: If you have a criminal record in any country, you will need to apply for a Visitor Visa (subclass 600) and provide information about your criminal convictions.

  • No debts owed to the Australian government: If you or any family members owe the Australian government money, it needs to be paid back or have an arrangement in place to repay it before applying.

  • Best interests of the child: In the case of applicants under 18 years old, the ETA is granted only if it's in the best interest of the child.

Who can apply for the Australia ETA?

You must hold a valid passport from an eligible country to be able to apply for an ETA. Enter your nationality at the top of this page to find out if you're eligible for one.

Who is exempt from getting an ETA for Australia?

Australian citizens don’t need to apply and can enter the country without a visa. New Zealand citizens can get a visa on arrival and don’t need to apply beforehand.

Do minors have to apply for the Australia ETA?

Yes, if they come from an eligible country. Parents/legal guardians can apply on their behalf.

Australia ETA validity: How long can you stay in the country?

With the ETA, you can visit Australia as often as you like within a 12-month period. You can stay up to 90 days per entry.

Extending the Australia ETA

The Australia ETA cannot be extended. If you wish to stay longer, you'll need to apply for an Australian visa.

Australia ETA: Required documents

For the Australia ETA, the required documents are minimal, reflecting the simplicity of the process. Generally, you'll need:

  • A valid passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of your arrival in Australia.

  • Passport photo: It should be recent.

  • Email address: The ETA is electronically linked to your passport, and all communication regarding the status of your ETA will be sent via email.

  • Payment method: A credit or debit card, or another accepted payment method, to pay the visa fees.

How to apply for an Australian ETA with us

The whole process is super easy and takes 15 minutes or less.

Step 1: Fill in your details on our platform or through our mobile app. To avoid errors, double-check that all the information matches your passport.

Step 2: Select how soon you want to receive your ETA and pay the fees.

Step 3: Upload a copy of your passport and submit your application.

Once your ETA is approved, you will receive it via email. This ETA is not placed in your passport but is electronically linked to it. We always recommend printing it out and saving a copy on your mobile device.

Australia ETA: Costs and processing times

The government fee of the ETA is USD $12.41.

For your convenience, we offer three different processing options to meet your budget and timeline:

  • Standard: Our most affordable option, best for those who have booked their trip well in advance.

  • Rush: If you need the ETA a little quicker than usual, choose this option for an additional fee.

  • Super Rush: Get your ETA in the quickest time possible for an express fee.

It's important to note that the processing costs associated with using our service do not include the official government visa fee.

Do I need the Australia ETA to transit through the country?

If you're transiting through Australia for less than 8 hours and you remain in the transit area, you don't have to apply for an ETA.

We recommend checking the website of your local Australian embassy or consulate to get the latest information.

Differences between the Australia Visitor Visa, eVisitor Visa, and the ETA

The Australia Visitor Visa (Subclass 600), eVisitor Visa (Subclass 651), and the Australia ETA (Subclass 601) are all travel documents that allow entry into Australia. However, they cater to different travel needs and have distinct characteristics.

  • ETA: This is an electronic authorization granted to citizens of specific countries. It permits multiple entries, with each stay up to 3 months within a 12-month period. The ETA is typically used for tourism and short-term business trips.

  • eVisitor Visa: Available only to passport holders of certain European countries. You can stay up to 3 months per visit within a 12-month period. The online application process is similar to the ETA, but may require more documentation.

  • Visitor Visa: This visa is for individuals who plan to visit Australia for tourism, business, or family visits. It allows stays of up to 3, 6, or 12 months. The application process typically includes an embassy visit.

Choosing which travel document to apply for depends on your nationality and the purpose of your stay.

I'm going to Australia to see my boyfriend's family. I did some research online and came across the Australia ETA. Just to clarify, is the ETA the same thing as a visa, or is it a different thing?

The ETA is not a traditional visa; it's an electronically stored authorization for short-term travel to Australia, either for tourism or business purposes. It’s electronically linked to your passport and eliminates the need for a visa stamp or label.

I’m planning to visit Australia for the first time and came across the ETA and the eVisitor Visa. I'm trying to figure this out—are they basically the same, or is there a difference between the two?

Both the ETA and the eVisitor Visa are designed for short-term visits to Australia, but they cater to travelers from different countries based on bilateral agreements. The ETA is generally for citizens from certain countries like Canada and South Korea, while the eVisitor is aimed at mostly European Union countries. The application processes are also a bit different. The ETA is applied for via a specific app while the eVisitor Visa is processed online.

So I got my ETA but since my old passport was expiring soon, I just renewed it and got a new passport last week. Now I'm wondering whether I need to apply for a new ETA since the one I have is linked to my old passport.

Yes, if you have a new passport, you will need to apply for a new ETA because it is linked to your passport number. Any changes in your passport details will require a new ETA application, as your current one will not transfer to the new passport.

I have a current AU visa valid till 9 Jan 2025. I'm coming to AU again on 6 Dec 2024. Can I stay on my current visa till 31 Jan 2025, or do I have to apply for a new visa?

iVisa
October 24 2024
Hi Tomasz, That’s a good question, and it’s great that you’re planning ahead. If your current Australian visa is valid until 9 January 2025, you must leave the country before it expires, even if you arrive shortly before that date. Staying beyond 9 January 2025 would be considered overstaying your visa, which can lead to penalties or affect future travel to Australia. If you want to stay in Australia until 31 January 2025, you must apply for a new visa before your current one expires. Make sure to apply well in advance to avoid any disruptions to your plans.

October 25 2024
Hi Khairull, It’s clear you have a strong connection to Australia, and it’s wonderful that you’re planning to return. As a Malaysian citizen, the simplest way to visit Australia for tourism or business is to apply for an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), also known as subclass 601. This visa allows you to stay in Australia for up to three months per visit and is valid for 12 months from the date of approval. If you plan to stay longer or return to Australia for other purposes, you might need to explore other visa options, such as work or student visas, depending on your plans. The Australia Visitor Visa (subclass 600) allows stays of up to 12 months. Ensure you meet the specific eligibility criteria for the visa you choose.

October 31 2024
Hi Vincent, It’s always good to get a head start on planning your trip. Since your trip is in August 2026, it’s best to apply for your Australian visa about three to six months before your travel date. This timeframe ensures there’s enough time for processing, especially in case of delays. Since you’ve previously used iVisa, we already have your details and documents in our database. Just let us know if there have been any changes to your personal information (like a new passport or change of address). Keep in mind that visa requirements can change, so it's wise to check the latest information before applying. Applying early gives you peace of mind and avoids last-minute stress.

I have a pending eVisitor 651 application - can I still apply for an ETA to enter Australia? How much is the super rush fee?
logo
iVisa
November 4 2024
Hi Maria, Thanks for reaching out to us. If you already have a pending eVisitor Visa application, it’s best to wait for the outcome before applying for an ETA. Submitting two applications at the same time can sometimes lead to processing delays or confusion. As for the Super Rush fee, please contact our customer support team for the current pricing. With the Super Rush option, you can get your visa in a few hours.

We will be on a cruise ship that has 3 stops in Tasmania and disembarks in Sydney where we go straight to the airport to return home. Do we need Australian visas?
logo
iVisa
November 5 2024
Hi Kris, Yes, you’ll need an Australian visa even if you’re only visiting for a short time as part of your cruise. Since you’re a US citizen, an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) (subclass 601) is the most suitable option. It’s valid for 12 months and allows multiple entries, with each visit lasting up to three months. Make sure to get your ETA before your cruise begins to avoid any issues at the ports in Tasmania or Sydney.

logo
iVisa
November 8 2024
Hi Phil, For your cruise with multiple stops in Australia, you’ll need a visa that covers tourism and allows multiple entries. As a British citizen, you have two options: 1. eVisitor (subclass 651): This visa is free to apply for and allows multiple entries within 12 months. Each visit can last up to three months. 2. ETA (subclass 601): This visa works similarly to the eVisitor but has a visa fee. Both options are suitable for cruise travelers, so it comes down to personal preference. Just make sure to apply well in advance of your travel dates.

We are only coming to Australia to get on a cruise ship; we will be there less than 2 days. Do we have to get a visa?
logo
iVisa
November 11 2024
Hi Doreen, Yes, you’ll still need a visa to enter Australia, even if your visit is under two days and only to board a cruise. For US citizens, the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) (subclass 601) is the most convenient option. This visa is valid for 12 months and allows multiple entries, with each visit lasting up to three months. You can apply through our platform or the iVisa app, and it’s a stress-free process.

What is the length of time you have to be out of the country between visits within the 12 months?
logo
iVisa
November 22 2024
Hi Cameron, That’s a really good question. With both the eVisitor (subclass 651) and ETA (subclass 601) visas, there isn’t a set requirement for how long you need to stay outside Australia between visits. However, each stay is limited to three months at a time. Frequent entries might raise questions about your travel intentions, so it’s a good idea to ensure your visits align with the visa’s purpose, whether for tourism or business.

Hi Thomas, If you applied for your visa through our platform, you can check the status of your visa application by logging into your account. You can also download the iVisa app where we'll send real-time updates about your application. If you applied through the official Australian immigration website, you can log into your ImmiAccount and use the Transaction Reference Number (TRN) you received when you applied.

iVisa
November 28 2024
Hi Mandy, Not being able to complete your visa application must be frustrating, and we're sorry about that. You can't apply for your Australia ETA on our platform because we recently suspended our Australia ETA service. We're working on getting it back up as soon as possible. However, as a UK citizen, you can also apply for an Australia Visitor Visa (subclass 651) and we can help you with that (just like the ETA, the eVisitor Visa is valid for 12 months and allows you to stay for up to 3 months at a time). In fact, if you choose our Rush or Super Rush options, you'll get your visa in just a few hours.

I intend to travel to Australia in January 2025 to visit family for up to 90 days. I wish to travel to Vietnam for a 14-day holiday within the 90 days. Which visas do I need to apply for?
logo
iVisa
December 2 2024
Hi Mary, For your trip to Australia, an eVisitor Visa (subclass 651) is the best option. This visa allows multiple entries within a 12-month period, with each visit lasting up to 90 days. You can leave for Vietnam during your stay and re-enter Australia without needing a new visa, as long as the total duration of each visit doesn’t exceed 90 days. For your Vietnam visit, you can apply for a single- or multiple-entry Vietnam eVisa as an Irish citizen. The validity of both visas is 90 days. Because it can take up to two weeks to get your Vietnam eVisa, it would be best to apply for one as soon as you're sure of your travel plans.

December 9 2024
Hi Victoria, Since you’re planning to stay in Australia for about four weeks, either the eVisitor Visa (subclass 651) or the ETA (subclass 601) would work for your trip. Both visas allow stays of up to three months per visit within a 12-month period. Either option will let you enjoy your time visiting family without hassle.

No, the Australia ETA allows travel for tourism and business purposes for up to three months at a time. This visa doesn’t permit you to work in any activity.

iVisa reviews your documents and assists you during the application process to avoid rejection. However, if the Australian government rejects or cancels your application, you are eligible for a full refund of the iVisa processing fee related to the number of rejected applicants. Other than that, we do not refund the government fees.

You may consider re-applying for the Australia ETA, depending on the reasons for cancellation or rejection.

In this case, you need a new passport and a new ETA as well. The ETA is linked to the passport, so the travel authorization in a previous passport can no longer be used once a new passport has been issued.
At iVisa, we understand that your time is valuable, and we strive to provide you with the fastest service possible. Our processing times are estimated based on the average duration it takes governments to process visa applications. These estimated times begin from the moment we receive all the correct information for your application until you receive your visa. While we work diligently to expedite the process, it’s important to note that we are reliant on the processing times set by the government authorities.
