New Zealand Visa (ETA) requirements
All visa-exempt travelers must obtain a New Zealand ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) before entering New Zealand for tourism, visiting family and friends, business, transit, or short-term study (up to three months).

Requirements verified against official government sources
- A valid biometric passport (must be valid for at least three months beyond your intended departure date)
- A recent passport-style photograph
- A valid email address
- Travel details (though a specific itinerary is not always mandatory for the application)

- Who it's for
- Citizens of New Zealand's visa-waiver countries and territories, Australian permanent residents, and cruise or cargo-ship passengers of any nationality. Australian citizens traveling on an Australian passport need neither this nor a visa.
- Permitted activities
- Holidays, visiting family and friends, business visitor activities such as meetings and conferences, short courses of study, arriving by cruise ship, and transiting through Auckland. It does not cover work, longer study, or coming for medical consultation or treatment.
- Entry points
- Air and sea, since New Zealand has no land border. Auckland International Airport is the only airport with a transit area, so a traveler routing through any other New Zealand airport is visiting rather than transiting and has to request the authority on that basis.
- Delivery format
- An electronic authority linked to your passport, confirmed by email. There is no stamp, sticker or label, and you present the confirmation at check-in. You must travel on the same passport the request was made with.
- Good to know
- Every traveler needs their own, infants included, and a child endorsed on a parent's passport is requested using the parent's passport details. The authority does not guarantee entry: the visitor visa itself is granted by an officer at the border. It also does not replace the separate New Zealand Traveller Declaration.
- Validity
- Valid for 2 years
- Entry
- Multiple entry
- Length of stay
- Stay up to 90 days per entry
- Processing time
- Get it in as fast as 15 minutes

Going to New Zealand for the very first time. Didn't know if we need a visa. Once I learn about iVisa, my experience of booking for 4 people was one of the easiest.
At 77 years of age, my computer skills are rudimentary to say the least. The Visa Customer Support was second to none. Customer Support guided me through a lengthy and for me complicated process until completion. Before starting the Visa process make sure that you have suitable facial photographs to download to the form.
Straight forward to do, and the response was quick to the request.
They mentioned a levy on tourists so when I was charged extra besides the visa charge I thought it was for the levy instead of faster service which showed other extra charges for fast service.
We found the process of applying for a transit visa relatively easy enabling us to continue our onward journey without any delays or problems.
Very easy to do and the progression of the process from iVisa timely and clear.
Everything was easy to do online. At one stage I was surprised because I had to bring up some fotos online. Because I had no fotos, I had to stop and do it all again the next day. It would be helpful to give a hint at the beginning of the applicationform.
Simple and easy to navigate and informative about the progress of the application.
it was fine experience but the necessity of providing a review was not appreciated.
The process was easy & smooth throughout. I only waited minutes for my approval email. I will use evisa from now on when traveling internationally.
New Zealand visa FAQs
Quick answers to the most common questions about the New Zealand Visa (ETA).
Still have questions?
Our visa experts are available 24/7 on chat, email, and WhatsApp.
Do I need a New Zealand ETA or a Visitor Visa?
Citizens from visa-waiver countries (such as the US, Canada, UK, and most EU nations) and Australian permanent residents require a New Zealand ETA for short visits. While Australian Permanent Residents need an NZeTA, Australian citizens are exempt - they do not need an NZeTA or a visa to enter New Zealand. If you're from a non-visa-waiver country, you must apply for a Standard Visitor Visa instead.
How will I receive the New Zealand ETA?
Once your New Zealand ETA application is approved, you will receive an email confirmation. The authorization is digitally linked to your passport, so there is no physical sticker or paper document to carry. However, it's always recommended to keep a digital copy of the confirmation on your phone for peace of mind, which you can also find in your iVisa dashboard if applied through us.
How long can I stay in New Zealand with an ETA?
You can stay for up to 3 months (90 days) per visit. If you're a UK citizen, you can stay for up to 6 months (180 days). The ETA itself is valid for two years and allows for multiple entries.
How long does New Zealand ETA processing take?
The New Zealand ETA is usually processed quickly. With iVisa, you can get your New Zealand Visa (ETA) in as fast as 15 minutes. We recommend applying at least three days before your departure date to account for any unexpected government delays.
Do children/minors need a New Zealand ETA?
Yes. Every traveler, including infants and children, must have their own New Zealand ETA. iVisa makes it easy to apply for the whole family in one go by using the "Add another person" feature during the application.
Do I need the New Zealand ETA to transit?
You need a New Zealand ETA to transit through New Zealand if you're from a visa-waiver or transit-visa-waiver country. Transit is generally permitted only through Auckland International Airport, and you must remain in the transit area for no more than 24 hours.
What happens if my New Zealand ETA application is denied?
If denied, you will receive a notification. In many cases, denials are due to simple typos, or in some cases, travel or criminal history. iVisa offers denial protection. In some cases, our experts can help you reapply for the ETA, or apply for a Visitor Visa instead, if required.
What are the most common reasons a New Zealand ETA application is denied?
The most common New Zealand ETA rejection reasons include incorrect passport details, a photo that doesn't meet official standards, or failing to disclose required criminal or immigration history. iVisa's expert review and smart photo tool catch errors and automatically adjust your photo or selfie to meet New Zealand government standards before submission.
Can I extend my New Zealand ETA?
No, a New Zealand ETA cannot be extended. To stay longer than your permitted 3 or 6 months, you must apply for a specific Visitor Visa or another visa type from outside the country.
